The Rafae Train

Baseball does not make it easy to love the game. Today Palmerio was suspended for Steriod use. Good. It was so obvious that he was lying to congress a couple of months ago. Its obvious that dozens of other players were using as well and eventually it will all come out because these ego maniacs can't stop using. And the ones that stopped using, you can see that they won't be in baseball for that much longer.

But does it really make a difference. 7 years from now when Palmerio is on the HOF ballot, I bet nobody will bring it up. Writers and Fans seem to have such a short term memory. People are now cheering Giambi, the media never made a story about Bonds actually admitting he used the cream (but he didn't know what it was), and Balco is the thing of the past.

First off, "Rafae" is the guy that works at Big D's Beauty Supplies on the corner of Lombard and Howard.

Secondly, Raffy is now going to become the face of steroid use in baseball which is probably not fair because for whatever reason he looked like less of a mutant than the rest of the usual suspects. But I guess that just proves the old adage that "nothing good can come from doing dick pill ads." Which if you look at it now, everything sort of mistakes. I keep envisioning neil making some dipshit pun about enHANcements, but I can't quite figure it out.

Baseball needs to officially differentiate between gamesmanship (phantom tags, hidden ball trick, deking a guy into sliding to slow him down) and damn ass cheating (injecting serum to make your arms the size of a raccoon, the spitball, putting roofing tar in your bat).

I heard yesterday that he had 1 HR in his first 100 ABs, and 18 HR in his last 243 ABs. And for the first few months of the season, his AVG was something like .220 - .240. And over the last couple of months, he has raised it to .280. Which makes me wonder if Palmeiro actually started using in the last couple of months. If that were true, that would mean that he was truthful to Congress when he testified. Seems odd that he would start using all of a sudden, but maybe he was concerned that he wasn't going to get 3,000 hits if he kept hitting .220 all year.

The thing that I don't get is Palmeiro said yesterday "Do you think that I would be dumb enough to intentionally use steroids after testifying to Congress?" But on the other hand, he's telling us that he never intentionally put anything illegal in his body. Which means that he was dumb enough to use something where he didn't know the ingredients. Is he asking us to believe that he is dumb (putting something unknown into his body) while telling us that he is not dumb enough to use steroids after his testimony? You just can't have it both ways.

Oh yeah, and I disagree with the comment that no one will remember in 7 years. Baseball writers remember that stuff. While I agree that most baseball fans will forget, I think that baseball writers tend to hold on to things like this for a long time.

Lee, I disagree that the writers won't forget. I haven't seen one writer come out and condem Raffy.

Stanazolol-
I am familar with this "roid as I have seen the needle being stuck many times by football players and bodybuilders. This is an injectable wonder drug. Works primarily on the fast-twitch muscles(this is what Ben Johnson used when he set the world record 100 back in the 80's). Palmeiero could have used 12 months ago and still had a positive test. Oil based and very thick, have to inject with a needle the size of the "cajun injector" meat marinader. More addictive than most drugs, including coke. Promotes physical and mental feeling of superiority and power. He could very easily have started taking recently based on his recent improvement. Hey, what else can you do as a string bean LAtino playing the game with genetic superfreaks?

Didn't Ray Ratto come out against Raffy? He counts, right?

And Slammer - your comment about "Mental Superiority"... well, Raffy certainly seemed superior during the hearings on March 17th, no?

Quick question for Jorge - I'm having a harm time pcituring my arms being "the size of a raccoon". Is that a good thing? Or do I match that description with my fat rolling up and down my arm, resembling the act of a raccoon hiding in a tree?
