Open Masters Thread

It's Thursday of the Masters - the official start of the "real" golf season. As the day goes on, post your comments here about scores, conditions, and your thoughts on the evolving first round.

(My prediction: the 1st round leader will be no lower than 68.)

Any guesses as to the winning score? I'd venture -8/-7. I think a score of +1/+2 will result in a top 5-6 finish.

Also, I don't think the score is fully dependent on the weather. While rain would soften the course, it would also lengthen it.

I don't think we have seen the course play hard and fast for 4 days since they did the MAJOR re-lengthening in 2002 (?).

The forecast is for very little rain, and they are already saying it is fast. I say the winning score is -5.

Wow. One of the very early co-leaders at -1:

Gary Player, who birdied the toughened-up 1st hole.

Crenshaw, Jimenez, Beem, Pampling and Crane are also -1.

David Duval and Clay Ogden - the US Amateur Publinx Champ - are locked in a tight battle for last.

Right now:
Ogden: +9 thru 10
Duval: +10 thru 12

No one within 5 shots of them.

It is unbelieveable how the Masters has gone from a tournament where you'd want to be on the course, to a tournament where you want to post, have your pimento/cheese sandwich in hand, and watch golfers throw up on their white caddy smocks.

No more Els/Mickelson back nines of 2004.

I cannot wait to watch tonight's converage to see guys hitting driver on #4.

rrd: I like it. I really do. A winning score at a major should be -6 to -8. Not this -15 crap.

Ogden: +11 thru 15
Duval: +13 thru 16

Freddie Couples is now -2 thru 7. Wouldn't that be something?

And then TIger doubles 15. My Goodness. Tiger is +1 thru 15.

Vijay is now the leader at -5 thru 17.
