Preakness

Ahh, the Preakness. After a long talk with Lee last night I think that I have three solid losers today, so beware. I don't like the odds going into this so I'm going to scale back some. Here are the picks:

1. Hardspun
2. Curlin
3. Street Sense

Wild Card- Circular Day.

Heading out shortly to Del Mar for another nice day of drinking and gambling.

Oh and Congrats to Eric on the Cavs win. Looking forward to that ugly slow down play against the Pistons like we saw last year.

This was one of the greatest races I've ever watched. And at Del Mar, they turn out the lights, turn all of the 100 TVs on the Preakness, and crank up the volume to create an amazing atmosphere.

With Hard Spun putting it into 5th gear around the 3rd turn, then Street Sense doing the same around the 4th turn, and then Curling doing the same down the stretch, it made for easily the best finish to a race I have ever seen.

The Belmont is going to out of this world, with all three horses on top of their game.

Um, really?

What am I missing?

There will be no Belmont. Ergo, the ratings and buzz factor for the Belmont will be nil.

End of story.

Who won the Triple Crown races last year? If you have to look it up (and I do), then that sport belongs in the same category as bowling and America's Cup.

I'm sorry, I don't get the attraction.

PS - well? Did you do the trifecta box??

The race was fantastic, both for the dueling horses, and the wide angle shots of the ghetto just outside the track. I attended the Preakness in 2001 and it was craptacular. 40' and rainy. I don't think we stayed for more than 4 races. Granted, we weren't smart enough to rent a U-Haul for transportation

Its OK Eric. You have hockey and I have horseracing. I will admit that I wouldn't watch horseracing if it wasn't for gambling. And gambling on this sport over the past 10 years, this was easily the best race that I've seen. The three favorites actually living up to the hype. And yes I did hit the $50 trifecta, and the $20 exacta.

And I'm sure you will be in for the Derby next year, so I don't even want to hear it from you.

And RRD, we got a Uhaul once for the Preakness and it was probably one of the worst experiences ever. For some reason the temp was about 95 and humid and we had a 45 minute drive home in the back of that thing. Ugh. And to think that I went to the infield 3 years in a row back in 98-00 and I didn't catch the HIV, I feel very lucky.

I really don't see how you can not get the attraction. There's a lot of drinking and gambling and every 45 minutes or so there's about 2 minutes of action. Reminds me of hockey.

Seriously, this was a great race. I know that the ratings for the Belmont will suck due to no Triple Crown candidate, but I think that Derek's right, three horses that are very close in ability will make this a very interesting race.

I watched the race at Laurel Park and it was no where near as good of an atmosphere as Del Mar (for so many reasons), but it was still great. Betting on random horses at Golden Gate and Lone Star with Derek was another highlight.

Leland: Hey, there's a race at Lone Star that goes off in 4 minutes, who do you like?

Derek: I don't know anything about any of the horses or anything.

Leland: I don't care, pick one at random and let's bet on it.

Derek: Ok, how about the 3-horse to show?

Leland: Exactly what I was thinking! Done!

That fucking 3 came in 4th by a head. I hope they send it to the glue factory.
