Baseball Ramblings

Ahhhh..baseball is in full swing and I'm missing all of it. Heard on the radio last week that Cox Cable is up and running on the MLB Package. Also saw a TV ad on Friday, so I decided to call and order it. They accepted my $159 and said that it was activated. I recorded the A's game on Saturday and went out to go grab something to eat with Ben and Carol, and came home and the game wasn't recorded. Just a black screen. Long story short, I ended up having a long conversation with a Cox Cable tech, discussing the ins and outs of the MLB deal with cable and me not believing it. He finally stated that he was watching the A's game there at the office so he knows that it is working and gave me the update that "some guy named Duchesser just gave up 3 runs for the A's", with me moaning into the phone and now getting even more pissed because the A's were cruising the entire game. In the end I had to control myself since I still needed this guys help. Now I have to wait until today for a cable guy to come out to fix our signal. If he doesn't show up, I might be ready to forgive Direct TV and go back to them.

I HATE ESPN- On Friday night I tried to catch my highlights on Baseball Tonight, right after the Yanks-Sox game. I waited for 45 minutes before they showed the A's highlights. How sad is that. They spent 30 minutes on the Yanks and Sox. What crap.

And can ESPN spend some time on other teams other than the Sox and Yanks? I know that this isn't anything new, but come on. Who is the best baseball team currently? Which pitching staff has had 18 out of 19 quality starts this season? And I agree with the Sportsguy on how disappointed he was with Morgan and Miller that they totally forgot about the Dodgers last year on their back to back to back to back homers off of Trevor Hoffman in the 9th inning, during a pennant race. This was absolutely amazing.

Now with that being said, I do have to say that I enjoyed the Yanks-Sox series this weekend. All were very good games and surprisingly they were relatively quick games, unlike last year, so I can't complain too much. I really do like a lot of the players, despite hating the teams themselves. Manny, aka The Predator, is probably my favorite. He really acts like someone playing in a backyard whiffle ball game. I know he doesn't need to sprint back to the wall to handle a wallball, but its just funny watching him trot back there and then bare hand the ball and whip it in. Big Papi is amazing and so much fun to watch hit that according to my friend Jeff, my golf swing looks just like his at the plate (that's not good). And Papelbon is simply amazing. I do find his stare to homeplate a little ridiculous. Maybe it was the extremely close up that ESPN was doing, but he looked like an idiot. As for the Yanks, am I the only non Yankee fan cheering for Arod (as long as it is not against my team)? And I'm simply fascinated with Abreu's gray glove.

Anyway, here are a couple of my additional thoughts after a month worth of baseball:
  • I have never seen so many injuries to major players to start off a season. Just take the A's. Harden, Bradley, Kotsay, and Loiaza are the major injuries. I never thought I would see Marco Scutaro playing RF and Todd Walker playing 1st for us in a million years. Ouch.
  • And yes, that stat is correct above. The A's have 18 out of 19 quality starts so far this year. And what is our record? 10-9. Simply amazing how banged up our team is. I should be happy with a 10-9 record, but I feel that our pitching will start to falter soon.
  • The Sox should look inward and not do too much talking about what just happened. IF they can stay healthy, then they are probably the odds out favorite, but I'm sure that this will not happen.
  • What is up with Tampa Bay's ownership? Are they the worst? Why haven't they traded one of their 1000 talented offensive guys for some bullpen help. It is painful to watch these guys pitch.
  • As of right now I don't see any team running away with their division. Angels and A's will be there to the end in the West, Yanks and Sox with the possibility of the O's and Blue Jays in the East, and everyone except for the Royals in the Central. I think everyone in the NL West and NL Central has a chance, with the Braves, Marlins, and Mets going at it in the East. This should be a tremendous year for pennant races.

How can you not watch your team??? Now that I have been spoiled to watch my team out of market (since 98) I wouldn't be able to live without it.

The DirecTV baseball package has really improved over the last few years. The main drawback is the cost. Also, don't expect to get too many HD games with DirecTV (other than ESPN). The expanded baseball package includes 1 or 2 extra HD games a night, which sucks when the Sox Broadcast all their games in HD, but you get maybe one Sox game a week in HD.

Its funny, you complain about Sox and Yanks, but then you admit you watched it and enjoyed the game! Somewhere the ESPN suits are smiling! :)

How great was Manny in Saturdays game going back for the ball have it bounce over his head, charge it, only to have it ricochet back between his legs. Love it. Another thing I love about Manny is a guy makes a great grab against him, or he wiffs, he just smiles and goes back to the dugout. As if to say, "I've hit plenty of laser shots before, and will hit them again, no biggie."

BTW, I hope you enjoy the April Quality Start Championship. The A's are clearly running away with that. You better make your plans for the big parade in downtown Oakland. I'm sure that ESPN BBTN crew will have wall to wall coverage...

I was a little bummed about going 0-5 on the road trip, the ageful mike myers coming up super unclutch, tampa cheerleaders and fans shoving yellow brooms in our face, but then something so undeniably excellent appeared on my television, mid 90's roto monster eric young sporting a sportscoat that could only be described as waffle cone with a satin sheen. I think we're going to be alright. And yes I know mike myers has been a pretty good lefty specialist over the years, but does consistently keeping ortiz to doubles really cut it anymore. Anyway looking forward to the hughes start.

And where's the mlb on this torii hunter issue, only 3 years for giving the royals champage. This should be at least a 5 year suspension. Dusty Baker is starting strong on bb tonight. He's talking about guys giving each other trucks as gifts in the clubhouse. There's something so old school about barry sending stonewall kent an f-150 for keeping quiet about the three truckloads of anonymous urine samples in his locker. Now that's chemistry.

Two quick things for Jay:

1. Yes it has been so painful without the package. Today is the first day back in action. I remember changing my working hours back east so I could stay up and watch the A's.

2. So I watched the Yanks-Sox. I watch it everytime its on. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about Sportscenter and BBTN coverage where they just run the game into the ground. I don't know why this surprises me since they do it for every big game in any sport.

3. And Jay, comments like your last paragraph are exactly why the majority of America hates the Red Sox. Its not the players or the coaches, but the fans.

Funny, I have been able to live without watching my team on TV- I don't know why that is.

However, if you take my pager away from me, I will have to kill you. So I guess that's how I stay attached...

good post, Derek, but two comments:

1) How can you say the games were short? I was bored in a meeting and looked at the times for the three games - they were:
3:18
3:25
3:33

Not exactly quick affairs.

2) Your swipe at TB management? You could easily scratch Tampa Bay in that statement and plug in "New York Yankees" and the statement would still be true, right? So why aren't the Yankees doing anything about their bullpen? Remember, they have had the lead in the last 5 games before blowing each one of them.

And dammit, Jon - you are right. Suspend Torii for life. What he did was worse than Pete Rose's (supposed) offenses.

So.... I post about how the Yankees will be back and in the race, not bragging about the weekend sweep or anything. Then you mention the A's quality start stat a couple times in your post (at the time when they are ONE GAME OVER .500) complaining how they aren't getting any run, and its Red Sox fans that have the problem??? Hmmm...not sure I follow but OK.

Manny, Manny, Manny. I don't know if I should love him or, well, just not care about him.

The look from him I love is the ...oops, I just got picked off 1st base, in the playoffs ...AGAIN. Manny, please wake up. You are so much better than that.
