Tolerance

Tolerance will become a big topic over the next 2-4 years.

Or intolerance, I should say.

A emailer to another political site put it well. The author is a conservative:

" You see, I “get” Palin. And I “get” why my liberal friends don’t “get” Palin. But my liberal friends just don’t “get” why I “get” Palin — and they never will.
“All conservatives are bilingual — we have to be. We speak both liberal and conservative. But liberals are monolingual — they don’t have to be anything else. They speak liberal, and are completely ignorant of the conservative tongue.” "

I don't think that any liberals understand - at all - what makes conservatives tick. We see that on some of the comments from the last post. In effect, Palin supporters "scare the crap out of" some people.

Why? If we are truly going to move forward in this country and work together, canwe at least try to understand each other? No one should be scaring anyone. Why do Palin supporters scare you? Even Bill Clinton "gets" Palin and why she is so popular.

Demonizing Sarah Palin gets back to the "red" and "blue" America that - I thought - Democrats wanted to get rid of. Hey, if Obama and his supporters want to have two separate Americas and run roughshod over the minority party like they think they were the victim of over the past years - fine. They have every right to. But then don't come selling you "unity" snake oil to me.

And please, let's not see more of these attacks in the future. However, it doesn't take a massive leap of faith to see how this could happen in certain areas over the next few years.

Since, nobody has responded, I can't let this go. I wrote something negative a little earlier but didn't post it. This is on a little different track.

What drivel....conservatives are bilingual...liberals are monolingual. I'm not scared of Palin. I'm scared of her becoming President. Look at the state of things with the last unqualified person to be in office. If McCain gets elected, I wish him good health for the benefit of the country. Palin was purely a political pick to galvanize the right wing under McCain. If that's not red and blue then what is Eric? McCain was tolerable (not that I would have voted for him) until he picked her. I suspect there's a bunch of people in the middle who felt the same way who are now swayed towards Obama.

I think the GOP is running scared of Obama. Look at all the "hate" and "fear" that's being spread. The country is sick of this shit. All I hear from the GOP is that Obama is a socialist who is going to raise your taxes and hang out in the white house with terrorists like Ayers and evil preachers like Wright. Nothing about real issues unless you count how McCain is going to lower everyones taxes to boost the economy through increased spending and trickle down economics 'cause that's worked really well in the past. The rich get richer and the hard working Joe the Plumber struggles to beat inflation.

Why is it that a lot of my republican friends, true Americans in their minds, send me the most intolerant, racist emails? Yet, my democrat friends don't do the same? This is just my microcosm but it's what I see and forms my opinions of the right.

I knew that attack was crap when the perpetrator sounded like a description of Obama. At first, I thought you posted a link to the Onion when I was reading it:

Bogus Attack

First, wow. My BS detector didn't go off last night in my posting rush. Sorry for posting a link to the article that turns out to be a hoax.

I have a couple things about your post, Mer. First, I can't defend any of those emails you get. But to say it's one sided is bull.

Go to any liberal blog. It is full of "Assassinate Bush" and "Palin's mother should have had an abortion" and "McCain had cancerous tumors removed? Darn".

Publicly, you can say almost anything you want about Republicans, but never the other way around. It is completely out of bounds for me to say "Obama is a n***er! Just kidding!". I know that, you know that.

But we can say anything we want about Palin. Just read this blog over the past week or so. And that is currently socially acceptable.

That's what I mean by bilingual.

Let's take a look at policy criticsm. I have been personally been called a "war monger" for being against arms control. I have personally been called a racist for opposing affirmative action.

But any one who wants to raise taxes is doing it for the "societal good".

Do you see the double standard?

Maybe a better term would be "double standard of attacks".

Now, Kermit, you've got to answer a question for me.

From your comment, I think you believe that:
1) Palin is unqualiified. Fine.
2) W Bush was unqualified too. Ok, whatever you want.

But please tell me your criteria for qualificiation that allows you to believe the first two points, and then allows you to believe that Obama is qualified.

You don't want someone in office that is unqualified. Fine. Tell me how you judge Obama as qualified and W Bush & Palin are not.

You walked right into the trap that I set.....I knew that you couldn't resist that "unqualified" and I didn't even italicize or double quote it. I'm not going to discuss my feelings on that today.

And to be frank, I have never seen any of the 3 examples you've quoted:

"Assassinate Bush", "Palin's mother should have had an abortion" and "McCain had cancerous tumors removed? Darn".

OK, let me take that back. I thought McCain did have a serious case of melanoma. Whether it's cancerous or not, I haven't done the research. I just now that the guy is in his 70's and having Palin as a backup is unnerving. But, I have listened to right wing radio on Sirius and it doesn't compare to the left. It's so angry and hateful. I have to admit the left stations are a little hippy and gay like (not that there's anything wrong that).

I'll try my best to put it in football term, let's say that Anderson and Quinn are diagnosed with torn rotator cuffs, would you want our 3rd string to fill in (I'm too lazy to even look up who that is).

You tell me that you're happy with Palin as a the Vice Presidential running mate disqualifying the fact that she may win votes for the party. Let's cut the crap about win the election at any cause. Can you honestly put her in the top 10 of who you think would be the best Vice President? If so, I'll never bring it up again.

I'm really not that opposed to McCain. Obviously, I don't agree with him on all issues. But, the guy is in his 70's....

I for one, have no qualms about the Obama/Biden ticket. I'm absolutely pleased with the pairing. Prove me wrong. I'm open to input.

And I love how you quoted all the little missteps that Biden has said. If you saw him on Leno(?) the other night, he was actually pretty amusing talking about it. And you know that's one thing I like about him. I'm sure he's a smart guy but he made mistakes that we all would make. On cleveland.com the ignorant forum people were making fun of him because he confused the Articles I and II of the Constitution. Give me a break.

Okay, I know I'm late to the party here, but I was out of town all weekend and didn't check in on the blog. Sorry for that.

I'd just like to clarify why Palin supporters scare me. They are supporting a VP candidate who cannot accurately tell you what the VP does.

Let's take this scenario. You are interviewing someone for a marketing job. You ask them what they would be doing if they were hired for that position and they tell you, "Well, I would be getting in there with the engineers and helping to come up with technical specs for new products."

Would you hire that person for a marketing position? Would they even get a second interview?

In an application for just about any other job, not knowing (or even worse, "knowing" but being wrong about) what that position entails would immediately disqualify you for that position. Except in this case, it doesn't seem to. That's why those people scare me. How can you support a candidate who doesn't even seem to know what her sought-after position would require of her?
