Straight out of a dictionary:
A device or instrument designed to perform a specific function, especially an electrical device, such as a toaster, for household use. See Synonyms at tool.
1. What does "especially" mean? You'd think if it was limited to an electrical device, it would have been stated another way.
2. Synonym is tool?

I think a Christmas tree stand definitely falls under definition #1 or #4. I'll leave it to the blog to see hwo definition #5 can be used.
God dammit, if a fireplace is an appliance, then a Christmas Tree Stand is....
Number 6 describes you perfectly.
Glad you think this is all fun and games. I certainly don't.

Eric, if you're trying to rationalize a regular ole tree stand as a household appliance - good luck. Maybe you could duct tape a power strip to yours and call it close enough.
But if the question is - is there such thing as a tree stand that is an appliance - well, you might be in luck.
Take for example, US Patent #5647569 which is a Rotating Christmas tree stand. It plugs in. Sounds like an appliance to me.
There are others out there. Check out Google's patent search.
Good luck. Care to explain more about this topic when you can?
The background:
We redecorated our house last summer and bought a couple of nice area rugs for our hardwood floor. One of them was in the 6-8K range.
Well, we put our Christmas tree on it and protected it with bags and rugs.
Anyway, we left for Derek's wedding, and come back a week later to see that the water has leaked all over the place, and somehow water went down the metal stand and onto the rug - where there were huge rust stains.
We've taken it to 2 professional cleaning services who both say they can't get the stains out.
Our policy basically states they will insure property damage due to accidental water leakage "from a household appliance". If this is not valid, then the claim is denied.
So - the point is to prove that the place where the water leaked from, the Christmas Tree stand - is a "household appliance" and therefore my loss will be covered.
The patent should help, so thanks!
holy shit. when i first saw this post, i figured little z authored it based on some silly claim that he'd been presented.
go figure its from big bro trying to figure out a roundabout way to say...ooh look at me, i can afford to have have expensive rugs and hardwoods in my house.
