As the Browns turn....

Every year, NFL training camps open, and a few teams have a QB competition between 2 quarterbacks. For example, this year with Kansas City - should it be Croyle or Huard?

In rare years, some teams actually have a QB competition between 3 QBs. I believe Jacksonville had this a few years ago.

Well, we have a first here in Cleveland. A real, true 4-way QB controversy. Should the Browns:

1) start Charlie Frye, the defacto starter from last year but can't avoid the mental mistake, especially in the red zone?
2) start Derek Anderson, who played OK at the end of last year, has a good arm but has shown absolutely nothing in preseason games this year?
3) start Brady Quinn, the rookie who is still learning the new offense but has poise and talent - and led the Browns to 2 fourth quarter TDs last night?
4) start Ken Dorsey, who is the "veteran" of this crew and plays with smarts - no mistakes - even though the talent may not be there? And he led the Browns to a touchdown in the early 3rd quarter last night?

to be fair, no one is calling for Anderson anymore, but people have made cases for #1, #3 and #4 above. My head hurts just thinking about it.

(and - it's 9:54 on Sunday morning - and Kamerion Wimbley is still a STUD.)

This is comical. First, let me say something about Quinn. I remember watching this guy named Jeff Lewis play for the Broncos back in the 90s and thinking "Wow, we are going to have no problems when Elway leaves since this guy is tearing shit up in preseason." I was naive and didn't care that he was looking very good against 2nd and 3rd stingers. Then when the time came, I was shocked that he sucked. So while it is encouraging to see Quinn look good, let's calm down a little bit. And I'm not really talking to you Eric, but christ, everyone is on his jock right now. Lead story on NFL.com, Sportsline, and even this blog.

Now onto the actual QB problem. Here is what I would do. 3rd preseason game, start Frye and then in the middle of the 1st qtr switch in Quinn. Worse case is Frye starts and Quinn comes in during the 2nd Qtr. If Frye still sucks and Quinn looks half way decent, then start Quinn.

And for those of you that want to compare what happened to Couch,to Quinn don't. Couch sucked. He would of sucked if he sat out a year first or played right off the bat. So if Quinn is your future, and you don't have any other options, start him. Its not really about playing immediately or waiting a year, its about your own talent.

Please for the love of god get rid of both Anderson and Dorsey. At least Frye has proven he can win with the Browns. Right???

I'm not going to debate whether Timmie sucked, but I challenge you to name a QB that would have posted average rating numbers behind the line that protected him in the first few expansion years. The line was non-existant, the WR's were weak, and did we have a running game?

As soon as the Browns show me they can protect the QB, I'm ok with putting Quinn in the game. Until that time, let Frye handle the job. Frye has grit, respect of his team mates, and he should have learned something from last year. If Grossman can take the Bears to the Superbowl, Frye can guide us to a 0.500 season (a sad statement in and of itself since I consider that susccess).

Romeo's little try out needs to end. Pick someone and move on. Step up and be a man. I know you don't like the options, make a decision and move on. Its becoming a distraction, and heaven knows we can do without that.

I'm sorry but Frye is no Grossman. If Frye was a Grossman, we wouldn't even be having this conversation right now and the Browns wouldn't of even traded up to get Quinn. That is how bad this situation is right now. Eric and I have this conversation every year with every retread you trot out there for the Browns. You try to compare him to another bad QB on a great team and think that you can do the same thing, while ignoring the fact that you are probably missing some other major parts. Even with the major improvements that the team has done this year with a rebuilt O line (finally after 4 years of calling for it), a solid running back, a great TE, some solid WRs, and a solid Defense, you still are still years away because of a couple of things:

1. You play in a tough division. The Bears can make the playoff since they play some weak teams.

2. You don't have a QB. Your other parts are still not good enough to overcome the lack of a QB. You don't have a D that can shut someone down or create turnovers. You don't have an explosive RB that can carry you. Your team still needs someone to make plays and Frye is not it.

So I don't see a problem with Romeo taking his time here. He has one more game to decide. I would expect him to start Frye in game 3 with Quinn coming in shortly after that. If it is some other combination, then he is an idiot, and has no plan.

I think we are saying the same thing here. My point is not that Frye is a good QB, I think he is average at best. My point is, you don't need a great QB to make the playoffs. As you state, everything else must be strong, and we have neither right now.

Put Grossman on this team and everyone will scream for a new QB. Put Peyton (or Brady) in, the team is average at best. The performance of any QB will degrade given the number of sacks our line gives up. And we simply don't have enough of the other parts in place yet. Right now, it doesn't matter who the QB is, we are not going to playoffs. 0.500 is success.

Savage did work on the O-line last year (which was no help due to a freak injury), and thankfully he did it again this year. I hope Lerner gives him enough time to get us back to the playoffs. Its still going to take some time gievn how big of a hole we were (are) in.
