Ethical Question

I have an ethical question for the group. Mer and I are in a Sunday golf league in Cleveland that has a club championship. There is a qualifying round and three subsequent rounds. I will be on vacation for the second post-qualifying round and will have to forfeit my match if I make it that far. Is it appropriate for me to enter the competition knowing that, if I advance, I would have to ultimately withdraw? Mer says f___ the rest of the league and that I should sign up. He hopes I knock out the defending champ in an early round so he does not have to face him.

Well putting it that way I sound like a big p*ssy. Bring on the defending champ. I'll be ready.

It's been my past experience that friends of mine have entered tournaments just to knock me out. And on occasion, they have succeeded.

Wow, Steve. If this is an ethical question for you, how are you friends with kermit and Eric? They don't even bat an eye about stealing money from a casino or getting it on with an 18 year old.

Wow, stealing money from a casino? If you're referring to taking a payout when you think you lost. That is an excellent ethical question. I have pondered that a couple of times at the table.

And, I have never gotten it on with a teenager in the past 20 years as far as I know. My rule of thumb when I was in my 30's was she must be old enough to get into a bar.

Don't lump me in with the unethical who lie, steal and cheat (Eric excluded of course). I'm the guy reminding you to put your ball marker back after you've moved it during a match when I'm one down and you've forgotten.

...and I'm the guy who warned you not to clean your ball after picking up when I asked you to. (No ethics there really, just wanted you to beat Eric, which you didn't cause you cleaned your ball ...oh, that sounds bad).

Steve:

There's no way you can avoid a forfeit? You can't postpone/reschedule?

If not, then you shouldn't enter. How can you concentrate on your first round match and play to win - when in the back of your mind you know it doesn't matter, since you have to forfeit anyway?

Unless the first round is against Kermit. You beat Kermit, but then you can't play in the 2nd round - both of you are knocked out.

Then the question becomes will he throw the match against me in the end or take me down in flames with him. Posted from a Nokia smart phone.

If I entered and drew Mer I would withdraw and let Mer advance because I am a true friend - not one would would bet against his buddies at Pai Gow.

OK, that was ONE TIME and I apologized after it. I had to do it...just once.

(Did I win? I guess not, since I probably would have remembered that.)

Yeah, we haven't forgotten.
