The main draw of Harbin is the snow and ice monuments they build every year, mainly to draw tourists. There's no religious/cultural significance to any of this.
In the afternoon, we went to a large outdoor park where snow sculputes were built. These were pretty impressive. At least 40 feet high, and 60-70 yards long, in this case below. This sculpture tells a story about a grand battle with the gods....
At night, we went to the main attraction, the Ice City. Even though it was about 0 to -5 F temperature, we bundled up enough so that all of us walked around for about 75 minutes. The main draw were the lit-up, colorful buildings, all built out of ice. Two examples are here below - just beautiful. There were ice slides, games, and activities to keep everybody moving throughout the night.
Some pictures of the ice sculptures in the darkness: (this was about 5 pm when we took these pictures. Gotta love being so far north.)
