Harbin Tigers

I'm finally getting around to posting on our Harbin trip in late January - this is the northernmost 'big" city in China; they have an Ice festival every winter that is world famous. Great, right? Except for the temperatures - the high each day was about 0-5, and it was -15 in the morning. We were very lucky; there was very little wind.

Our first stop was the Siberian tiger park. This is well known in the ex-pat circles, especially with families with boys! They feed the tigers live animals - like chickens - to the the delight of the paying consumer.

Here's how it works. There is a wire about 8-9 feet up above the ground; the person ties a chicken to it - upside down - and wheels the chicken out on the wire. There's about a minute or two of pacing and plotting by the tigers, before one jumps up, snatches it, and runs off with the chicken while the other 10 tigers chase after him.

Here's a video of the pacing and plotting; my clip sadly did not capture the actual eating of the chicken.....
