Doan's Pills

Yes, this is me today. Walking around the office like the guy on the Doan's pills package.

The dogs were barking at 4 am this morning - I went downstairs to let them out, but somehow missed the last step. I went flying in the air and landed, back-first - on the edge of that last step. Oh my God, was it painful at 4 am. I think I was a motionless heap for about 10 minutes before I could move again.

And the pain is not that much better at 11 am.

Boy, you don't realize how much you use your back muscles until something bad happens. You can't put socks on standing up. It takes 5 minutes to get yourself into a car. Just getting up and out of your chair - or sitting back down - causes shoots of pain all over your body.

I'm supposed to play golf with Don tomorrow. The official NFL injury report lists me as "doubtful", and if I do play, I'll command Don to go pick up the ball out of the hole for me since I can't do it. Wonder how he'll like that?

Beware the Curse of Lampley

Why have you foresaken me?

I heart Jim Nance

Funny thing while trying to find the perfect picture of Jim Nance on Yahoo. For some reason Shawn Mcdonough came up on the third page...Why? Do they just group all the gay play by play guys together? And since we are on the topic of announcers, below are my top 5 announcers based on the criteria of "How much do they bring to the table."

1. Vince Scully- I hate the Dodgers, but will watch their games while doing work, just to listen to his soothing voice. And he doesn't have a color guy with him. Do you see that anymore? Just one guy doing the game?
2. Bill Raftery- I get chills listening to him open up the NCAA tournament with his famous line. With so many terrible college basketball color guys, he easily tops the list.
3. Al Michaels- Not joking here. I love his play by play for MNF.
4. Johnny Holliday- Loved him in college and after, but really remember listening to him in the car with my dad on the way to 4 Seasons for indoor soccer during the week and listening to him do the early 90s Terps basketball games. Plus he is on XM doing games and is outstanding.
5. John Miller- He would be higher if it wasn't for his idiot color guy. Still remember listening to him do O's games on 1090 during West Coast trips when nobody was listening since it was like 1:00am EST, and he would start announcing in spanish. The guy has passion and a great sense of humor.

Miscellaneous ramblings

That's for Derek, who hates seeing "Verne Lundquist" on this blog.

Emptying my head tonight:

1) NIT winner: Don, with South Carolina's win in the semis. Final standings:

Don 6-11-3-2-1 = 72
Brad 6-12-4-2-0 = 62
Eric 6-14-3-1-0 = 54
Derek 5-9-5-1-0 = 51
Paul 4-10-2-0-0 = 32

2) Derek is now 38th in the big Dayton NCAA Pool - out of 850 people - but if UCLA wins, it looks like he will finish 4th. That could mean as much as $1000 for his $35 entry.

3) The worst invention, bar none, is the automated telephone operator that waits for your voice input. I like the operators that took the touch tone input, but now that they can recognize your voice, it's creepy and like talking to your mother.

I called UPS for a status on a package the other day. I called earlier to find out that the driver attempted to deliver, but couldn't becuase no one was home.

UPS Automated operator: "Please tell me the 10 digit tracking code"
Me: "8...5..9...."
UPS: "Please say delivery for delivery information, or pickup for pickup information"
Me: "Delivery"
UPS: "An attempted delivery was made on Tuesday at...."
Me:(mumbling) "Yeah, I f**n know this already

(long pause)
UPS: "I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you correctly. Please repeat your command, or hang up to try again"

Did it really pick up the F word?

4) Why can't you be convicted if you earn your degree? I know plenty of college grads that are charged with misdemeanors. Is it just a woman thing?

5) On a related note, if the marching band refused to yield, just get the security guards to pull them off - or get the National Guard. That was right after Kent State, right? C'mon - get the football game going again - take out those band hippies.

6) And more music notes....I met a person during an in-house training class on Monday who works in the same business as me. His name? Gerardo. Yes, of course he had a last name.
It took a whole lot of self-restraint not to break out into a rap when he introduced himself.
If those guys from the Nextel commercial were around with their boombox, they would've hit "play" on the box after the introduction and I would have been dancing to "Rico....... Suave"

How do I get that mental picture out of my head when I'm in a meeting with him?

When landscapers attack!

I'm tired of seeing Lundquist everytime I log onto this blog, so I'll give you this picture of the once great diva of pop. I guess I would look like that too if I partied with Bobby everyday. WOW!!!

Anyway, my baseball preview will be posted shortly, probably over the weekend. Man, I can't believe that opening day is right around the corner. If you have a second or two, check out the top 10 baseball mound charges. This never gets old.

And what the hell is going on out here. I almost hit about 100 mexican students yesterday walking across the street? Protests? What are they protesting? The illegals already get free health care, educations, and free use of every other government program? They want to put a bill in place that will crack down on the illegals? Um..don't we already have one? I think its time to stop writing bills and start talking about enforcement. If you have the proper enforcement and let the agencies that are in place do their jobs, then people wouldn't have a problem when they talk about the guest work program. But when there is zero faith in the government on enforcing the immigration laws in place, because of certain political pressures coming from certain communities, the talk about increasing the guest worker program becomes more talk of amnesty. And when Bush and company start talking about amnesty, it makes all the local politicians even more scared to stand up against the illegals, because if they do pass an amnesty bill, the local politicans are throwing away close to 5 million votes in the LA/San Diego area. If you have a free hour sometime, ask me about the Border Patrol's limitations on enforcing the current laws in place. Its a joke. Democrats and Republicans alike are making this agency absolutely useless.

Verne Lundquist

I will put a post up later once I fully comprehend what happened today.

But first, I must say a few words about the world's most underrated announcer, Verne Lundquist.

Think of the top few lasting images from CBS Sports over the years - Verne was there.

1) 1986, Verne was on the 17th green at the Masters.
"Maybe..... YES SIR!"

2) 1992, Verne was in East Rutherford
"There's the pass ... to Laettner..... YES!!!!!'

3) 2005, Verne was on the 16th green at the Masters.
"Here's the chip.... now down the hill.....how about this...... OOOOOHHHHHH!"

4) And he was in Washington DC today
"Brown for 3....NO GOOD........By George, the dream is alive!"

Can anyone think of any calls by Nantz (God, I hate him)? Enberg? Gus Johnson (besides "AAAHHHHH" in random games)

If I could pick one play by play announcer to narrate my life, it will have to be Verne Lundquist, hands down.

UCLA

Wow. What a game. Saved my NCAA bracket. I have UCLA winning it all. And according to Eric, I'm doing very well in his 800+ person pool.

And what's with this kid Morrison from Gonzaga? Crying on the court during the game? Come on. Great leadership there.

Lessons Learned

I know everyone is getting tired of all of this Vegas talk, but what else do we have right now? I can tell you about the WBC game last night and how I met the Japanese guy from Major League 2 or I can go back to complaining about Starbucks.

So anyway, Lee and I were talking about what did we learn from this trip to make sure that the next trip would be better financially. Number 3 and 4 this past time worked out well for me and I will continue to follow them, but I have to find some way to remove number 1 from my memory. If Eric has to stand next to me with a bat and hit me whenever I start to put money on this then so be it...

Top 5 Things that I need to start or continue doing on future Vegas trips:
1. Don't bet on Black/Red. Or if you do, just bet it once and leave. Don't try to press your money if you loss. This ends up in you betting $700 on Black after 3 straight red hits. I've tried to stop doing this over the last couple of trips, but I get liquored up and I can't stop myself. This has singled handily cost me close to $4000 during the last three trips. Do they have a patch that reduces the urge to do this? Ugh.
2. Still not sure when to press the bets on BJ and Pai Gow. It seemed like whenever I went up to $100 in BJ, I lost. Eric and Lee, what do your books say?
3. Stay away from the Sportsbook. I did this for most of the weekend and I ended up $30. Of all people, I should know not to go crazy in the sportsbook.
4. Don't overtip the dealers. This probably saved me a good $30-$40 this month. Save it for when you leave, and if you are up then tip, but try to refrain from tipping during a session. Now, I still tipped a little during my sessions, but it was minimal and I could actually tell a difference.
5. Good looking women can still throw the dice well in craps, but be careful about going back to the well too often. For example, Carol rolled nicely for Wiz and I at the Mirage the one night, and then did fairly decent with Eric and I at the Monte that morning. But then we all went back for one last roll, and unloaded and she crapped out immediately. How did we not see this coming?

Change that Card!

I promised myself that I would wait until I got home tonight to post my review of the trip. However, now that I see Leland's and Derek's reviews up - plus that fact that I am getting NO work done today after the red eye flight - that promise is out the window.

1) Results: Well, I lost again, but only lost the money I "intended" to lose. Had to make an emergency withdrawal just to have a cushion Saturday night - and didn't lose any of that money. So no harm, no foul.

1a) But the best result is that I had great fun. Friday night was a night I won't forget for a long time. Dinner, gambling, instant messaging with a stranded friend still sitting at the slots at Imperial Palace because he can't cross the street.. good times. Even if that was after the St Patrick's Day Massacre.

2) I have to echo Derek's comments about the Monte Carlo. A disappointing experience. Some examples:
a) Derek & I at the craps table Thu morning - 6 am? - and NO service at all for drinks. None.
b) The sports book lines were horrendous. Period. I know a lot of the people betting are novices, but you shouldn't be in line at 8:15 for a 9:20 tipoff and seriously wonder if you will get the bets in on time.
c) I lost a pot in poker when the dealer dealt the turn before I called.....the resulting "do-over" caused me to lose. Yes, I am a bit bitter.
d) Why are all the table games surrounded by slots? I don't want to hear bells and whistles when splitting 7's.
The funny thing is that Kermit and Steve (who was absent this trip, due to twins born in November) were trying to convince me to get reservations elsewhere, and Don is not overly impressed with the Monte. I think we will be somewhere else next year.

3) I should just throw a dart against the wall when doing NCAA B picks. I think I overthought too much. Friday I went 5-14, including a stellar 1-9 in the morning session. If you are betting $11 a game, it's not bad; if you are betting $77 a game, and are getting scoring updates during that losing streak on the golf course - well, it makes you a little queasy. Argh. Final result: 27-37-1 over the 4 days. More post-mortem analysis on this to come.

4) This was the least amount of time I spent gambling at the tables - and surprisingly, I have no regrets. I avoided any "international incidents" (like from 2003, losing $700 at one sitting at a craps table), and that was a plus. I see what Kermit did this trip - he treated it more like a vacation, visiting the spa each day - not a bad idea at all.

5) I'm glad Don could come; we had lots of fun and Don certainly enjoyed everyone's company. (I'm sure he can speak for himself in the comments, especially about his big "win" Friday night at dinner. By the way - how does he answer co-workers who ask how he did at Vegas? He was up a small amount in "real gambling", but down $600 for the trip....) And Wiz - Don is expecting some lessons from you on $1/$2 no-limit so that the drunk college kids can be an ATM for him as well.

5a) Kermit, again, was a source of great entertainment on the trip as well - sorry your stay was too short. We will change that next year, won't we? Next time you'll know not to clean your ball when lifting (Rule 22!) And Steve and I will monitor you at all times to make sure you stay away from "Flaming 7s". Jees, I have to monitor Kermit, Derek, Wiz....

5b) And, of course, it was great to gamble with Derek, Leland, Wiz (I'm embarrassed to say that I forgot how much fun he is to gamble with) and especially Carol. Great form and poise at the craps table for the rookie from Arizona.

6) If you thought the Monte Carlo dealers were crap, you should see the Aladdin staff. Wow. Gives new meaning to "Crusty, bitter old men".

7) About the notebook - the notebook is there to keep track of results for each gaming session and where all the money goes. My two roommates have the same diary; they may a little more conspicuous in their note-taking.

8) I can't believe I didn't open the trip with a Tom Collins. The whole trip got better results-wise after that Tom Collins on Friday night. Damn.

9) I've got to pace myself better. Every trip to Vegas I do this - stay up too late, get up too early, and by the 3rd night (Saturday) I am D-E-A-D. Sorry I missed the steakhouse; I felt like I was about to fall asleep at the dinner table with Kermit. I've got to get more sleep during the trip.

10) What can I say about Card Sharks? What a great game - it's a shame the MGM is going to take it away. I need to start a petition to keep it alive somewhere - maybe Circus Circus would be the right place for it. It's a perfect game for drunk men to yell "Higher!" "Lower!" "Change that Card!".
And we heard the impossible at the table - the dealer yelling "One Black Out" to Don on Sunday evening. I bet Don's $100 chip from Card Sharks has been sitting in that rack since January.

11) $10 craps is not for me. It's much more enjoyable to play $5 craps when planning long sessions.

12) About the 16-vs-10 incident; I didn't mind it so much that he did that, but the way he acted while staying on 16. It felt like he was being arrogant, thinking he knows more than us rubes about the "book". If he defused the situation by joking it off, saying "I know it is wrong, but it is one of my personal rules - I hope you don't mind", it would have warmed him up with the group. But the air of superiority when he did it just reeked of Ivy-league arrogance that I abhor.

13) Don and I found our new jobs when we retire and have our wives support us at age 50: setting obscure lines at the books. Like, for instance, someone needs to set Women's second round lines in a timely manner. We knew that Purdue and UCLA would meet in the second round - a game set for Tuesday - at 2 pm Pacific; as of 8 pm Pacific, no line was set. (Don visited 3 casinos for the line; no luck). C'mon - 6 hours is more than enough time.
(By the way, if you had the Lady Southern Jaguars and +68.5 points, you still lost).

14) Finally, about my wardrobe: you can make fun of it all you want, but here is the quote from Leland Saturday night:
"It is clear that Eric is the more well-dressed of the Zahn brothers."
I rest my case.

I know I've forgotten many other moments on this trip; I'll fill comments in this post and others with those.

Major Hull Breach

Well got my ass kicked again in Vegas, but this was one of the better trips since the small group of people were made up of all hardcore gamblers. Here are some quick notes from the trip to add onto Lee's post. I expect to see Eric's post later on today:

-End of an ERA: This will probably be the second to last time I stay at the Monte. It would be the last time, but I'm staying there in April with Jay and Laura. The dealers are getting worse, the tables are getting more packed, and I'm tired of the poker and sportsbook rooms being understaffed.

-Poker: Didn't play much. Didn't want to. Got my ass handed to me the first night when I lost on A-A, K-K, A-A, and Q-Q to full houses in a span of about 30 minutes. Brutal. Played in one of the tournaments the next morning and lost and then called it quits for the rest of the trip.

-Excellent Addition: Eric's friend Don was an excellent addition to the group. Hardcore gambler who gets just as excited in craps as Eric and I. He was even more pissed than me when a group of college kids came to the table and was betting the don't pass line. Mikah, while being very quiet impressed me with two things; 10.5 hours in the same Pai Gow chair and a $300 loss at the Wheel of Fortune slot machine. Oh, and how can we forget Carol. The girl managed to gamble with us the entire time at the higher limit tables on $300. And when I ran out of cash and I didn't have my ATM card the last night, she offered her money to keep me going. Thank God she did, since I made a nice run at the BJ table. Got to love enablers.

-Not Invited back: I really won't go into it again, but Lee's sisters boyfriend Mario or Marcello should go into hiding for about 2 years before he appears again. And the faces from everyone made at the BJ table when this schmuk stayed repeatedly on 16 totally justified all of my comments. As I told Lee, I apologized to him for the delivery of my comments, but not the reason why I made the comments.

-No more driving: It took me 7 hours to get home last night, when it should of taken 3.5 hours. I knew I was in trouble when I decided not to get out of bed at 9:00am to make the trip home. And with the repaving of I-15 over the next couple of months, I think that the 7 hour trip will become more of the norm than the exception.

-Dinners: Wow!!! I mean WOW!!!! Two great dinners at Craft Steakhouse and Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill. This just reinforced the idea that we had the right people on this trip. The "Guess the spread on the women's games" and the out of control wagering on our waitress was just too much fun. Thanks again Don.

-Well Wiz...looks like we won't be able to do anymore stupid bets with Lee and Eric around.

-Golf: Wagering on other golfers is almost as fun as gambling on yourself. Since Eric, Don, and Kermit are all 4 handicaps and below, Wiz, Lee, and I decided to wager on them as well. I got Kermit, Wiz got Don, and Lee got Eric. Don put on a show and won Wiz $40. Kermit, I'm not too sure what to say. Very disappointing.

-New Look: Despite what Lee said about the Mirage, I'm not too impressed. I liked all of the overhangs that they took out. Now it just looks very blah...I do like the lighting though. And I was impressed with MGM's new look. Slick poker room up front, and an outstanding sportsbook. Yes its big, but it has improved over prior years.

-Eric: With this last trip he now has acheived Legend status as a gambler. With his trusty little notebook, his High School teacher looks, his love of Tom Collins, and his one liners, he is now starting to get some stares from the dealers and pit bosses. Easily the best person to go gambling with. With Eric stating that he will be out next year, I'm sure we will have at least 10-12 people joining us. I have yet to meet someone (oh, maybe Mario) who didn't come away amazed and entertained with their gambling experience with Eric.

-BJ: I'm back!!!! I only had 2 lossing sessions at BJ this year, which broke a 6 year drought. Despite losing money overall, this alone has made the trip worth it.

Great trip overall, which I would rate an A-. It would of been an A+ if Jay and Laura were there, so everyone needs to start putting the pressure on them to come out next year.

Backdoor Action!

It's Sunday night in Vegas and I'm just about even for the trip (and not the usual definition of "even", i.e. +/- $1000). Before I forget too much, here's a mini-recap of the trip (from what I remember) in no specific order. I'm sure that this will not be the last post on this subject.

-The Mirage has been extensively renovated, and I like it a lot. A while ago, I mentioned that I thought that the Mirage's look was dated with the Polynesian theme and the low ceilings. Since then, they have almost completely overhauled the casino area. Got rid of the canopies that made the ceilings seem too low, updated almost everything else and finally have a club.
-I saw more casinos this year than ever before. Between dinner at MGM and Caesar's and walking around with Bob and Liz, I don't think that I've ever spent that much non-golf time away from the Mirage. Oh yeah, they all still suck.
-I did the X-Scream ride at the Stratosphere. Not really as exciting/scary as I had expected. I'm deathly afraid of heights and wasn't very nervous. Weird.
-Eric carries around a little notebook and writes things down from time to time. Not sure what he writes, but it was handy for golf updates (they were the group ahead of us), and misc gambling uses.
-For those who haven't met Eric, he dresses like your 8th grade social studies teacher. For example, a line was set during dinner at Mesa Grill Friday night: Over/Under for how much Eric would have to pay the bouncer to get into a club--$200. The smart money was on the over.
-We gambled on where our Mesa Grill waitress was from, what letter her name started with and whether she was married. The best part of the night, however, was credit card roulette for the ~$650 tab. Wiz gave us the bright idea of pulling out the cards Survivor-style where the last one in the hat had to pay. Six cards went into the hat and I was the second to last to be pulled. I almost shat myself. Thanks again, Don!
-Celebrity sighting: Tom Brady in the Mirage poker room.
-No hot chicks at the Monte. As if I need another reason never to stay there. Luckily, I am still seeing spots from the uber-bright lights, so it doesn't matter if the chicks were hot or not, I couldn't see anything anyway.
-Schmoopie
-My sister's boyfriend standing on 16 vs the dealer's face card. Oh...no. Derek's quote: "I just wanna smash you over the head with a slot machine." And I think that he was the less angry Zahn brother. I can't really argue with the logic, but perhaps the presentation could have been a little more subtle.
-CardSharks! Worst...idea...ever. A close second was $700 on black. Third was the field bet. Derek and Wiz need adult supervision AT ALL TIMES. I think that the social studies teacher must now supervise all Wiz/Derek wagers from now on.
-Speaking of CardSharks, I hate the MGM Grand. That place is a maze. It's gotta take 20 minutes to walk from one spot to another. And trying to find anyone there? Forget it.

-Two words: Backdoor action!

Thoughts While Driving to Vegas...

Leland here, blogging from Derek's laptop while driving to Vegas. We're currently going about 100 mph trying to make up time from sitting in a traffic jam from a road re-paving. While I look at the screen to type, we are whizzing by trucks so fast that they are literally just a blur in my peripheral vision. If we live, we should be there in about 90 minutes!

Actual exchange while listening to XM coverage of the Korea vs Japan WBC game:

Announcer: SK Lee up to bat, the #3 hitter for the Korean team
Derek: (interrupting the announcer) Why the fuck would you pitch to this guy?!?!
Announcer: ...Ball three, and it's obvious that they are not pitching to Lee
Me: oh my, you have a problem.

Did I just hear someone refer to Chan Ho Park as fantastic? Is this 1999? Did BK Kim shut down the US the other day? Is this bizarro baseball world? Can anyone make sense of this?

Mar 14, 2006

Last second preparations

T minus 23 hours and counting. Last second thoughts:

1) NIT picks due in less than 90 minutes! Hurry! :)
2) I'm desperately trying to not look at the lines before I get there. I want to pick the Thu/Fri games like an NFL season - make my picks (line and score) without being biased by the official line. It's getting harder and harder not to see/hear the line before I arrive.

3) At the risk of being called a cub scout den leader, here's the agenda of all the activities:

Wed 9pm: Eric/Don arrive; Derek/Leland should already be there or arriving soon after

Thu 9 am: $40 Texas Holdem Tournament at the Monte
Thu 9:20 am: Games begin. Leland: are you going to watch all the games at the Mirage? Will there be room at the book there?
Thu 4 pm: Late games start
Thu 8:30 pm: Late games end
Thu 11:30 pm: Kermit (finally) arrives

Fri 9am: $40 Texas Holdem Tournament at the Monte
Same game times as Thu
Fri 1:20, 1:40: Golf tee times at Paiute; one group is Kermit, Don and me; Leland has the other
Fri 9:30: Dinner at Bobby Flay's at Caesar's

Sat 10am: Games begin
Sat 1 pm: Kermit playing golf
Sat 6pm: Dinner at MGM Steakhouse
There are poker tournaments on Sat and Sun that Don will have information on

See you there!

Emergency Request

Does anyone out there have access to ESPN Insider? If so, please leave a comment or contact me at zahn4@msn.com. I need to find out if the tournament preview capsules they have are worth a subscription.

Vegas

T minus 2 days!!!! I'm getting so jacked for the trip. I don't know if its because I get to gamble with Lee and my brother or if its because I excited to play some poker at the Monte. It is definately not due to college basketball. Will I wager this week on the games? Maybe. I'll take some of the 11-6 and 12-5 moneylines, but other than that, I'm probably going to pass on all of the other action. Maybe a couple of $11 wagers to keep things interesting, but not much more than that.

On the other hand, going to the WBC games really has me super excited about baseball. For those of you who are interested, here are the updated over/unders on wins for baseball this year. These are for real, so give me a call if you are interested in any of these. What do I like? Hmmm. I like the under in the Cards and Angels, and love the over for Seattle and the Padres. Cleveland at 88.5? That's probably perfect.

2006 NIT Pool

It's back! The only known NIT Pool is back for it's 7th (or 8th??) annual go-around.

The pool was initiated by Eric and his friend, Paul Barlow, who was tired of the tedium of the NCAA pools. Anyone can win those- it takes real talent to enter (let alone win!) an NIT Pool.

The 2005 pool was won by Austin Grisby,a co-worker of Derek's. We had a record 5 entrants last year!

The bracket is found at:

2006 NIT Bracket

It is $5 to enter. Send your picks via email to Eric at zahn4@msn.com

Deadline is 6 pm Eastern on Tuesday. Winner takes all!

1 pts for the opening round, 2 pts for the 1st round, then 4 for 2nd round, 8 for quarters, 16 for semis and 32 for final.

Tie breaker is the total points scored in the championship game.

WBC

Heading to the WBC game today. When Austin and I bought tickets, we thought that we would be able to see the US vs. Japan, since we bought tickets for the 1st place teams in each pool. Instead we get to see S. Korea vs Mexico, since the US lost to freaking Canada. Who really cares though, since I'm now starting to crave baseball. And just nailed tickets to the championship game in San Diego next monday. I know that Eric is going bezerk over college BB, but seriously Eric, give it up. Your terrible at picking games this year and your confidence is shot. Start concentrating on the Tribe and your wonderful Browns FA. Oh, and the Ravens just signed Pryce? Hmmm. Sort of dwarfs the Browns signings don't you think?

It's a great day....

to be a Browns fan.
What a great set of signings yesterday by the Browns. From left to right:
LeCharles Bentley, the #1 overall FA (as rated by ESPN); a franchise center from the Saints Ryan Shaffer, a LT from the Falcons;
and Joe Jurevicius, the possession WR we haven't had since Brian Brennan.

Look out NFL, here we come. The real re-birth of the Browns has begun.

Next stop: Julian Peterson? Oh my, if that happens.....

This picture came across my email last week from Bam Majera wannabe G. Wolfinger. Why I'm wearing a members only jacket and a white helmet??? Because I joined the badest scooter gang in Bermuda. We ruled Elbow Beach with an iron fist. First you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the wall street journal...forget it. Live Blogging the Practice Round

In preparation for Vegas, I'm "practicing" my basketball picks by picking a good amount of games each day and seeing if I can go over .500. I'm telling myself that this will sharpen my concentration and get my mentally prepared for four grueling days in the spotlight in Vegas. I plan to break the record of 47 bets over 48 games, set in March, 2003.

Today, I picked 13 games; there were 8 games in the early afternoon, and I went 4-4. Typical.

Tonight, there are 5 games of interest for me:
7:00 ET: Kent -6.5
9:30 ET: Georgia Tech +3 (can it, Terps fans)
9:45 ET: Miami-OH -2
9:45 ET: Georgia +8.5
9:50 ET: USC +4

With the magic of ESPN Full Court and DirecTV, I will be able to watch most of the games. Time to live blog the session! Check in starting around 9-9:30 to see what will transpire.

(quick update: 8:10: Kent 43, Buffalo 27, 18 min to go. Go Go Flashes!)

9:30: We're live from the Zahn basement with my remote, 3 Pepperidge Farm Pirouette, and a 2-liter of Fresca! Our viewing options are:
ESPN: Pitt vs West Va
ESPN 2: Missouri vs Nebraska (ugh!)
Fox: Fordham vs La Salle (that's the A-10, Derek); after that, we will join the Cal-USC game
Full court: GT vs Maryland, Ga vs Arkansas, Wyoming vs AF, and Idaho vs Nev.

It's amazing that either Fordham or LaSalle will be in the A-10 Semis!
Any bets on GW getting 1 win in the NCAA? I see them as a #6 seed now.

9:37: And we are underway in Greensboro. 2-0 Md. Defense for the Terps seems solid, for now.
Kent did cover earlier today; is it a sign of a problem that I interrupted reading "Goodnight Moon" to Warren in order to check my pager for the Kent-Buffalo final? Don't answer that.

9:47: 16-9 Terps; I think Caner-Medley touched the ball on 5 straight possesions; I think they scored on 4 of them. Maryland is dominating underneath; GT can't hit a jumper.
In the Big East - Pitt has this 7' center who is an absolutely stiff. He missed 4 point-blank shots in a row.

9:56: Please tell me no one on this blog has watched a complete episode of "Wild N Out" 21-9 Maryland. Ga Tech can't buy a basket.

10:13. 36-16 Terps. Wow. GT is terrible. Yes, Md is playing better D, but my God - there is no offensive flow, no plan on offense. Jones a 3 - 39-16 Terps. THe announcer just talked about how some players/coaches are talking about the similarities between this team and the '04 ACC championship team. Uh, no.
He also said earlier that there are teams in the ACC that needs to schedule better. Ya think? I was going to write something about Williams' comment yesterday that the Terps "would play Missouri St anytime on a netural court - we'd sign up for a 3 year series with them".
It's kind of hard to find that credible when the schedule for the Terps this year - outside of Maui - had more cupcakes than a birthday part for an 8-year-old.

We're swithing to Denver, where Wyoming is killing Air Force 34-18 with 15 minutes in the half. An Air Force loss would certainly help all bubble teams, including the Terps.

10:26: Halftime; Md 42-27. 1 FG in the last 4 minutes. Other scores:
USC leads Cal at the half, 33-31; I'm not sure that Cal is a lock if they lose this game.
Ark 30, Ga 25 ; Wyoming by 8; Miami losing by 6 in the 1st half; and Fordham up 10.

10:49: One good game right now: Wyoming 44, Air Force 41 with 4 minutes left. I'm not convinced that Air Force shoudl go even if they win this game.
It's not looking good for the practice round now, as Cal has stormed back to take the lead over USC, Ohio leads Miami by 13, and Arkansas is up 5 at the break.
Now 2 minutes to go in that AF-Wyo game; no one has scored. Still 44-41. Ugly.

10:55: That can't be right. Air Force has lost 13 straight conference tournament games. Their last win was 1990. And the last 2 years they were a #1 and #3 seed!
4 seconds left, LaSalle with the ball down 2....no! Fordham goes to the semis. Wow. The A-10 is:
St Joe's v TEmple, and Xavier v Fordham. Everyone that got a bye in the tourney - lost today. Note: Derek Wittenburg coaches the Rams.

By the way - congrats to Virginia in beating Va Tech today. One of many coming for Dave Leitao.

11:14: Well, this is turning out to be an abysmal night. Cal is up on USC by 13 with 3 min to go; Md up by 25 over Ga Tech (yeah, that pick looks good now, idiot). Miami down 15 with 7 min to play. My hope to get one win tonight rests on Georgia, who is now down 14 with 14 minutes to go.

Yikes. Well, hopefully this will follow the pattern of the 2003 US Open Qualifier; I shot an 84 or so in the practice round. 3 days later, in the real thing, I shoot 69 to advance. Let's see that under-par round in Vegas next week.

United States vs Timothy Wormley

Spent Wednesday in District of Columbia court. Long story short, a couple of days after Christmas, a guy from my office and I witnessed a guy breaking into his car. We chased him down and the cops caught him a few minutes later. This is the resultant trial.

Wednesday, 3/1: I received a call on my cell phone from the US Attorney telling me that they were going to subpoena me in this case and all of these details. I assume that it's just someone from work fucking with me, but man, it's a really detailed voicemail. Whatever, I'll believe it when I get the subpoena in the mail.

Friday, 3/3: I get the subpoena. Hmmm, this isn't a joke. The US Attorney tells me to block the entire day. Really? I can't see how this is going to take more than a couple of hours. I figure that we'll be out by noon at the latest.

0730: Driving to the metro station, I see a completely naked woman walking around on Route 1 in Crystal City. It's 33 degrees outside and she doesn't even have socks on (would it have been wierder if she was naked and had socks on?). This is going to be a wierd day.
0800: Get on the Metro near my office in SE Washington DC. I'm going down the escalator and one woman is riding up. No one else is in sight. As we get a little closer, I realize that she is having a full-on argument with herself. No one else around, and she's not on a cell phone. She's yelling at herself. This is just getting wierder and wierder.
0830: Arrive in DC Superior Court and head to the Witness Waiting Room. Get instructions on what to do, what to expect, etc. We are told that if everything goes perfectly, we can expect to leave around 11AM, but these things average until about 2pm. Geez, they weren't kidding about the all day thing.
0900: We're in the courtroom. It's about what I expect. A wood paneled, circular room with the elevated judge's bench, some spectator seating, and a couple of podiums for prosecutors and defense attorneys. It's mic'd strangely, so you can hear EVERYTHING. You hear the attorneys whispering to each other, you hear every paper shuffle--EVERYTHING. It's wierd.
0915: All rise! Court is called to order. I'm strangely nervous/excited/anxious. It's like the People's Court meets A Few Good Men. As it would turn out, it's more like People's Court meets Cops, but you'll see what I mean.
0916: Defense attorney requests a five minute pass to have his client called in from the tank (where they keep the incarcerated people).
0920: The US Marshall in the courtroom gets the woman we have been waiting for and walks her in. She is in the orange jumpsuit and leg irons with a crazy afro. She looks like she is just off the latest shooting of Cops, Florida or the cover model for CrackWhore magazine. I cannot emphasize enough how crazy she looks.
0921: Judge Turner mentions that the defendant looks better than the last time they met. Really? What did she look like last time? Did she still have her second head attached? Holy shit, it's gotta be crazy to be a judge.
0925: Crazy crackwhore is gone, a couple more cases are called and moved for administrative reasons. This is the real nitty-gritty of the legal system. Lawyers unavailable, court re-schedulings, etc. Nothing really interesting.
0935: A guy is called for some sort of a trial/plea. He pleads guilty to assault. He punched a guy in the face at a bar or something and got arrested. When he got arrested, he told the cops that if he got out, he was gonna run and they weren't going to catch him again. His words, "I'm gonna run, you tell the judge that I'm gonna run!". Well, joke's on you. They told the judge, she denied bail and you've been locked up for the last 37 days. Stupidity really has no bounds.
0940: He states that he made a mistake and isn't going to run, enters a guilty plea and is sentenced to time served and probation with a $2,000 bond.
0945: Our case is called. My heart starts racing for some reason. I'm not really involved as anything more than a corrorborating witness, but I'm nervous/existed/anxious again. The defendant doesn't show, and the Marshall believes that he is in the tank, but they somehow can't find him. The judge tells us to show up at noon, when the Marshall says that he will have him up and ready to go.

In DC, the traffic court building is right next to the criminal court building, so I go to fight a couple of traffic tickets. By 11:45, I have beaten $125 in parking tickets. This trip is paying off after all.

1200: We're back in court.
1210: More admin stuff.
1225: Defense attorney talks to the prosecutors (a chick who looks to be in her mid-30's, Amy, and another woman who appears to be in her early 40's. Amy looks like she works a lot, bags under her eyes, but used to be pretty. If she lost 25 pounds and got some sleep, she'd actually be kinda hot. We decide that she has a nice ass, but needs to hit the gym to tighten it up a little bit. But I digress...). The defense attorney is asking about a plea, the prosecutors say that it's off the table. He comes back with something else and is shot down again. It's interesting to watch them play poker/chess with each other--trying to read what the other is thinking, make moves and countermoves. The prosecutors seem to believe that they have a solid case and can win it outright. The defense attorney checks us out and then heads back to talk to his client. We're going to trial!
1245: Trial starts
1250: We are asked to leave the courtroom. The defendant makes a statement, which we are not allowed to hear.
1255: Ben takes the stand and starts to testify on his version of the events. I'm sitting in the equivalent of the green room where I'm not supposed to hear any of the proceedings so that my testimony can be used later if necessary to back up Ben's. However, because of the mics in the courtroom, I hear about 85% of what is going on and what is said.
1320: Ben is done with his testimony and the cross-examination. Break for lunch.
1330: We're not supposed to talk to each other, so we walk out of the courtroom separately and then go to lunch.
1420: Back from lunch and in court. Talk to defense counsel for about 10 minutes about random stuff. He's about 6'0", at least 280-300 lbs, black guy with a shaved head. Interesting guy to talk to.
1455: Wormley is back in court and we're waiting for the judge. When the judge arrives, we are sent out of the courtroom. About 10 minutes later, the prosecutor (not the semi-hot one) comes out and tells us that he has been found guilty and that we can come in for the sentencing portion. During the sentencing, the guy denies all of it. Amazing. Honestly, you should have seen his record. Every time he got out of jail, he got busted for stealing something. The funny thing is that he got busted for this on Dec 28th, and then got busted again in January. The sentence is for 100 days of jail time, to be served at the end of the sentence that he is currently serving for the January bust.
1525: We are out and justice is served!

All in all, it was a very interesting peek into the daily dealings of the criminal justice system. I have a lot of respect for judges in general, but this really confirmed it. I was very impressed with how the judge handled the matters, how sharp she was with all matters of the law (as you would hopefully expect), how she handled the courtroom, the lawyers, all of the crazies, and how she seemed to actually care about what they did. And even with all of the sob stories and whatnot, she doled out firm sentences and rulings using her judgment.

I was also very impressed with the US attorneys. They handled probably about 8-9 cases just in that one day. For each one, they were up to speed on most of the relevant facts of the case and were able to make informed recommendations on each. They handled our case pretty well, they had already done their homework and asked us a few pointed questions for clarification. They knew what the defense attorney was going to try to do and were prepared for it. I know that they have a lot of support staff keeping the jackets and case papers together for them, but it took some sophistication to keep it all together and running smoothly in front of the judge and defense attorney.

All in all, it took about a day for what was a pretty clear-cut case. I was glad that I did it, but really hope that I never have to do it again.

I believe....

In preparation for the Vegas trip, I'll post my gambling beliefs - those rock solid credos that guide behavior at the casino.

Here goes.

I believe that...

1) Any male who stays on 16 against a 10 is a communist or a Howard Dean supporter
2) Any male who waffles on that hand (hits once, stays the next time) should be immediately castrated.
3) You should always hit 12 vs a 2.
4) The hardest hand is the high soft hand (A-7, A-8). All three options (hit, double, stand) are valid in some cases. Like A-8 vs a 7. What do you do? A-8 vs 10? A-7 vs 7?
5) Never take insurance unless you are playing with Kermit. If Kermit takes insurance, you do too. If he doesn't, you don't. He is uncanny at this.
6) You should always have the right to receive your double down card down.
7) if you are hitting, you should ask for 2 less than 21. For instance, you have 14; ask for a 5. The dealer will give you a 6 or a 7.
8) Always make fun of other's play, but only if you don't know them. Don't make fun of play of people you don't know well - like your friend's wife who loves Kerry/
9) The best time to play craps is 9 am.
10) It is a good sign to open up an empty craps table.
11) The horn bet should only be used when you are drunk or winning; if you see me do this, let's hope it is the latter.
12) It is ethically acceptable to root for a shooter to 7 out - even if you are betting with the shooter - if he is one of those assholes that takes 30 seconds to line up the dice before each roll. I have struggled with this one immensely before coming to this conclusion.
13) Roulette is a glorified form of Keno. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
14) If you come to Vegas during tournament weekend, bet more than $5.50 a game on the tourney. (True story - I met someone who did this).
15) Anyone who orders a Tom Collins as a drink is a genius. Follow him.

Freddie is sick so Eric is throwing the dice

Warming up this afternoon for our trip Vegas trip by playing craps over the phone with Eric. It might not sound like fun, but boy its exciting. The table is getting hot. Anyone who wants in, let me know and I can conference you in.

Scottsdale

Went to Scottsdale over the weekend for a quick visit. Mixed feelings about the town. Spring time is amazing out there. 85 degrees, spring training, and excellent golf. Why have we not been there before? Plus they added a couple of nice casinos, so it would be perfect for a long weekend.

Where's the Charmin????!???

So what do people use when they run out of toilet paper? Never had that problem? Hmmm, so I guess I'm just that lazy. Last night I ran out of TP, but magically found a roll of Bounty underneath the sink. Inspected it, thought it was soft enough and felt like it would get the job done. Well, never use Bounty!!! NEVER!!! Bounty caused the mother of all toilet backups. I guess the Bounty is too thick for the plumbing, so I had a massive overflow. And Bounty is so compact and made not to dissolve in water (thought about that after the fact), that you have to use the plunger like 2,000 times before anything even starts to drain. I actually had to remove the Bounty from the toilet, since it just wouldn't drain. And after I cleaned up everything and took a 40 minute shower, I had to take a quick piss. Flushed the toilet and realized that some of the Bounty was still in there and it was blocked up again. Plunged again, this time only for about 2 mintues, removed the Bounty and took another shower. I almost passed out in the shower due to all the cleaning products that I poured on the floor. Good times. Almost as good as minding your own business, then having one of your friends take your picture in a hotel lobby, only for it to look like your taking a dump.

This had me thinking about a couple of things this morning on the way to work:
1. Would it of made a difference if I used cheap papertowels?
2. Should of I used something different, like a warm wet towel or something like that?
3. Is there anything better than Charmin Ultra?

Giambi: "Something is wrong down there ever since sleeping with that girl named Paula in SF"

NCAA Review, 3/2

What a wonderful time of the year. Conference tourneys are starting in earnest today - which means 11 straight days of tournament action leading up to selection Sunday - and then Vegas will be here.

Here's the picture for the tournament as of this morning:

A-10: 1 lock - GW. No bubble teams at all here.
ACC: 4 locks (Duke, BC,NC, NC St.), 1 bubble - Fla St. What a win last night; that may have done it for the Noles; however, the committee may punish them for that horrid out-of-conference schedule - schedule strength of #318!!!
A-Sun, A-East: 1 each
B-10: 6 locks (Ohio St, Iowa, Ill, Mich, Mich St, Wisc), 1 bubble - Ind with 2 wins (home vs Mich St, away vs Pur) have played their way into the tourney for now.
(Although the Mich St win is nothing to write home about - they are now 7-7 are will be severly overrated in the tourney. I see them in an 8-9 game:
(8) Mich St. vs. (9) Missouri St
with the line being Mich St -4.5
and I will be licking my chops.
B-12: 3 locks, 2 bubble. Tex A&M win last night over Texas puts them in the mix, but their profile is still weak. Colorado has to win 2 games in the B-12 tourney for a chance.
B-East: 7 locks (we'll put Syracuse there), 2 bubble, SH and Cinci. Is a home win vs. Cin good enough to put Seton Hall in, after their recent slide? I say no.
B-West, Big South, Big Sky: 1 each
C-USA: 1 lock, 2 bubble (UAB, Houston). I can't see UTEP getting in with 0 top 50 wins; UAB doesn't have one either - but if they can beat Memphis this week, the Blazers will be in.
Colonial: 1 lock, 2 bubble. G Mason is in; NC_Wilmington (RPI #38) is probably in if they get to the finals, and Hofstra (#40) still has an outside shot. IT's possible that 3 can come from this conference.
Horizon, Ivy: 1 each
MAC, MAAC, MEAC, Mid-Con: 1 each
Missouri Valley: what a mess. Northern Iowa, everyone's darling, is now the #6 seed in the tourney - unfortunately, they will be playing a red hot Missouri St team. Wichita St and Missouri St and probably in; Crieghton is too; Northern Iowa should be in even with a loss (although that 1-5 record in the last 6 will hurt, but they have SEVEN top 50 wins - compare that to Syracuse's 2 or Boston College's 2 or Air Force/UAB 0 ). Which leaves us Southern Illinois (RPI 43) and Bradley (RPI 46). It is conceivable that this conference may get all 6, but I will say 5 for now, with Southern getting the shaft.
Mountain West: no locks, 3 bubbles: SD St (the leader, RPI 52), Air Force (RPI 40) and a hot BYU (RPI 56). Two combined top 50 wins. Should the regular season champ of a top 10 conference get in (which is San Diego St) without the tourney win? Can a team like Air Force (overall SOS is 155, non-conference 273) just plod along, win the games they should, lose the one they should, and be 21-5 - get rewarded? BYU is the hottest team - 9-1 in their last 10 - with wins over SD St and Air Force in the last month. We will see. The weakness of the bubble may help them.
Northeast, OVC: 1 each
Patriot: I think Bucknell is in, no matter what.
Pac-10: Pretty clear; we'll put Cal in to make it 4 locks, 0 bubbles.
SEC: This is clear as well - 6 locks now (Tenn, Fla, LSU,Ala, Ark, Kentucky). Everyone has done enough. No bubbles here.
Sun Belt: Western Kentucky has an outside shot as an at-large if they stumble; I want to see the Hilltopper mascot in the big dance. I love that guy.
Southern, Southland, SWAC: 1 each
WAC: Nevada is in as a lock; Utah St (57) and La Tech (70) have outside chances.
WCC: Gonzaga, of course, is in.

That means we have:
57 locks:
8 bubble teams that are in: Fla St, Cinci, Indiana, NC-Wilmington, Tex AM, N Iowa, Bradley, and....Air Force, I guess.
bubble teams out: the rest of the ACC, Seton Hall, Hofstra, Colorado, S Illinois, BYU, Utah St, La Tech, Houston, UTEP.

Last four in, I think, are: Bradley (last), NC-Wilmington, Fla St, and Air Force.

The thing to watch this week are the conference tournaments involving lock teams; if Gonzaga, Nevada, Bucknell, GW, etc. go down, this means one less spot will be available for the bubble teams - so we starting crossing the above teams off one by one.
